Sort post, count penguins: the most remote UK’s post office is hiring

The United Kingdom is looking for people who want to run the “most remote post office in the world” in Antarctica. In addition to being responsible for the post, employees must count the local penguins and maintain the museum and buildings.

Those who successfully complete the application with the United Kingdom Antarctic Heritage Trust will receive a five-month job on Goudier Island in Antarctica.

It is the first time since the beginning of the corona pandemic that the location opens. For almost two years, the tiny island did not see visitors, but during a normal summer, about eighteen thousand people visit the secluded place.

Potential candidates must be physically fit, environmentally conscious and able to live with minimal impact on the environment. Workers have no access to running water and no fixed power supply. There is also no internet connection, but limited contact can be maintained with the Home Front via a satellite connection. The salary is around 1,800 British pounds.
