Some IED-looking objects found in Londonderry

Northern Ireland police found four bombs in a cemetery in Londonderry (also known as Derry) on Tuesday. That discovery comes on the day that US president Joe Biden visits the country.

They are probably pipe bombs. Assistant Chief of staff Bobby Singleton speaks of a “sinister and worrying development”. The bombs are being investigated.

Biden has now landed in the country, to dwell on The Good Friday Agreement. That ended the years-long battle between Catholic Republicans and Protestants over the future of this part of the United Kingdom in 1998. The president said earlier in the day that”keeping the peace is the highest priority”.

Police warned Friday of possible attacks near Londonderry on Easter Sunday. That is the day when the nationalists traditionally commemorate the uprising against the British in 1916 with a parade.

Near the place where the pipe bombs were found was an unannounced parade on Monday. In the process, masked people attacked a police vehicle with petrol bombs.
